Speech Therapy:
Communication and Swallowing Therapists (CST) provide support to children with craniofacial anomalies and cleft-lip and palate (CACLP) since the early days of life to minimize feeding difficulties through feeding assessment and management. The CST will work closely with nutritionists and nursing specialists to provide the most effective care and ensure that children with CACLP can maintain adequate nutrition orally.
As the child grows, regular, consistent assessment of his/her speech and language skills will be monitored. This is critical to determine if any speech production or resonance errors are the result of structural abnormalities or compensation for the child’s weak/insufficient muscles. Therefore, the CST will closely work with the Orthodontic and Plastic Surgeon to ensure optimal care and outcomes.
